Baidu
now has more than 100 million users for Ernie Bot, its Chinese-language ChatGPT-style generative artificial intelligence chatbot, the company said on Thursday.
Baidu shares on Thursday have rallied 3.5% to $118.41. The stock has a similar gain for the year to date.
Baidu’s chief technology officer, Haifeng Wang, made the announcement at a deep-learning developer conference in Beijing.
Best known for its Chinese-language search engine, Baidu is also making a major AI push. In October, CEO Robin Li said Ernie Bot’s capabilities were on par with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model in terms of overall performance. The current version of Ernie Bot is built on Baidu’s Ernie 4.0 large language model.
In its announcement, Baidu said that since its release in August, Ernie Bot has generated 3.7 billion words of text “in workplace scenarios,” written 300 million lines of code, processed 400 million words of contracts, and created 5 million travel itineraries, among other things.
Baidu also provided an update on its PaddlePaddle deep learning development platform. Baidu said that PaddlePaddle has been used by more than 10.7 million developers, with 860,000 models created to date.
Ernie was primarily trained using Chinese text and code, but has some ability to use English-language prompts. Gaining access to Ernie Bot without an ability to read Chinese will be impossible for most U.S. users; Barron’s tried to register for an account on Thursday without success.
