Zilliqa 2.0 Launch Brings PoS and EVM to the Blockchain

  • Zilliqa 2.0 introduces PoS consensus and EVM compatibility, enabling smoother staking and more flexible smart contract development.
  • AI integration via ElizaOS allows on-chain automation for DeFi, asset management, and seamless transactions on the Zilliqa network.

Zilliqa has finally entered a new chapter. With the launch of Zilliqa 2.0 which began with the “Agate” migration phase on June 23, 2025, the network officially left the old system and embraced a new, more efficient system.

Instead of relying on Proof-of-Work as before, Zilliqa now uses a Proof-of-Stake system that allows anyone to help maintain the network by staking their tokens. This change is not just about efficiency, but also about opening up a wider space for participation.

On the other hand, the transition to version 2.0 was not done carelessly. Zilliqa has prepared an automatic migration process for all accounts, balances, and transaction history. So, users don’t need to move assets manually. But there is one thing to note: staking.

If previously users were staking on the old network, now they need to take several steps to adjust. Starting from claiming pending rewards, unstaking, then moving tokens to EVM-based wallets such as MetaMask or Rabby before being able to restake.

Zilliqa 2.0 is coming — and with it, a new era begins ⌛️

We’ve heard your questions and understand the excitement (and confusion) around the migration. To help everyone prepare with confidence, we’ve put together a detailed FAQ — in both text and audio format.

New Portal, EVM Wallet, and Two Staking Options

Last April, CNF reported that the staking portal 2.0 two options: liquid and illiquid staking. The former provides flexibility because the tokens can be traded, while the latter is suitable for those who want a long-term commitment.

Both options can be accessed through EVM wallets like MetaMask and Rabby, making the staking process feel simpler. No more complicated processes or having to go back and forth between platforms.

Furthermore, there are also major changes on the technical side. Zilliqa now supports EVM, which means developers can write smart contracts in Solidity—the same language used on Ethereum. But Zilliqa hasn’t abandoned its old identity just like that. Scilla, their original smart contract language, is still maintained, so the two worlds now coexist.

Not only that, but the X-Shards system is also introduced. This is a kind of mini-blockchain split that can run in parallel, making transactions faster without overwhelming the network. The block time? About two seconds. Almost instant. If you’ve ever been frustrated by a transaction being held up for a long time, well… that’s an old story in Zilliqa 1.0.

AI and Blockchain? Zilliqa’s Already Running

What’s quite mind-blowing is that since the end of January, Zilliqa has also been integrated with ElizaOS. This means that AI agents can now transact directly on the blockchain, access DeFi applications, and even manage assets without human intervention.

Imagine having a personal assistant, but he lives on the blockchain and never sleeps. Not many networks have reached this point, and Zilliqa is immediately stepping on the gas in this emerging area.

However, the journey to Zilliqa 2.0 doesn’t stop at the launch. Users still need to check the readiness of their wallets, make sure the old version of staking is open, and start preparing to migrate staking to the new network. This process may feel technical, but compared to other blockchain migration processes that can sometimes be confusing, Zilliqa has provided a fairly friendly guide.

Meanwhile, as of presstime, ZIL is changing hands at about $0.01008, up 1.15% over the last 24 hours, driving its market cap to surpass the $195 million mark.
